Together with colleagues from Hungary, Germany and France, Aveliina emphasized in a recent article in the journal Restoration Ecology that the focus should be on restoring wild vegetation instead of the afforestation campaign, which has become popular in mitigating climate change. The biodiversity of meadows, prairies, heaths, steppes, various wetlands and many other naturally open (i.e. without trees or only partially with trees) ecosystems is under great threat due to the scourge of afforestation. The global call for "planting trees" must become the goal of "restoring wild vegetation".
Aveliina has also written on the same topic in the recent Vikerkaar. Read more here (in Estonian).
